Britain is not poor. It has been mismanaged into looking poor. Taxes are heading for historic highs while services and infrastructure rot, and more than 100 billion pounds a year goes on debt interest that builds nothing. An island with energy under the sea, food in the soil and fish in the water has sold, shuttered or regulated its productive base into exhaustion, so water, energy and food are insecure, expensive or both. The first duty of government is to protect the people it represents; instead the political class treats a national emergency as a communications problem. Tone rewrite only.
