The succession

The Royal Court said Harald died at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. Crown Prince Haakon became king immediately; Norway did not wait for a coronation or proclamation to transfer the office.

Harald's reign

Harald became king in 1991. His life included childhood exile during Nazi Germany's occupation, an Olympic sailing career and a long effort to modernize Norway's monarchy without abdicating in old age.

Haakon VIII

The new king formally announced the name Haakon VIII in the Council of State. He retained the royal motto used by his father, grandfather and great-grandfather: 'Alt for Norge' - All for Norway.
